Why Executive Coaching?

June 11, 2005 -- All sports teams and individuals have coaches; even the Super Bowl, Stanley Cup, World Series, Masters, and US Open winners.  Why?

One obvious reason is that, as individuals, we often lack perspective.  Can you see your own golf swing?  Doesn't it help to have someone tell you right away that you've failed to follow through or that you twisted your wrist?  Having a coach provides a big picture, and perspective.  We need this not only in sports, but also in business endeavors.

Does having a coach mean you're weak, or that you need help?  Absolutely not.  Of course, a coach may help with areas of trouble.  But a coach can also take stellar performance and help you make it even better.  The truth is, most of us have excellent AND deficient areas of our performance.  Many times, although others can see our strengths and weaknesses clearly, we cannot.

I worked with an executive/co-owner of a large company who was so incredibly bright, and he and his partners brought the business a long way.  This guy was so driven and so smart, and he believed that being hard on his employees would get the best performance.  He was wrong.  Much research in human behavior indicates that a bully gets his way immediately (and certainly when he's right in front of his employees).  What's most important, though, is what your employees do when you're not there.   The research also shows that involving employees as a team effort, respecting them, and providing positive incentives for behavior creates lasting change.  Morale is higher, turnover is decreased, and the bottom line is better off!  I worked with this CEO for a brief 3 months, and he learned how to better handle himself and his employees.

A second reason to hire a coach is for accountability.  So many executives are, obviously, quite self-motivated.  At the same time, any of us can use some accountability.   When you're at the top of an organization, there may be nobody who will keep you accountable, and nobody who'll tell you the truth.  After all, you're their boss!  A coach will keep you accountable and will tell you the truth.

And why a psychologist-coach?  There are many wonderful coaches who don't have a PhD in human motivation and behavior.  I certainly don't think it's necessary.  But I think you have a better shot at getting a top-notch coach when you work with someone who has six or seven years of post-graduate training.  Unfortunately, coaches don't have to be certified or licensed.  You can't be sure what you're getting.  When you hire a coach, ask for references.  Ask for their training logs.  Read what they've written.

Finally, you and your coach should have a wonderful rapport.  If you don't, go elsewhere.

In business, the bottom line is king.  I know you want to know, "How much does coaching cost?"  My first answer is always, "it shouldn't cost anything."  If improving your business won't affect the bottom line, don't hire a coach.

How much time will it take?  Again, "it shouldn't take any time."  Of course, there may be an up front investment in time.  Coaching, however, is meant to make you and your employees more efficient.  Expect that, once you improve your performance, your efficiency improves, as well.
